DB police of Tangail arrested one more suspect in Nikhil Chandra Joardar’s killing early hours of Tuesday from Uttara of Dhaka. He is identified as Goutam Rudra. Gulam Mahfuzur Rahman OC of Tangail DB police said that detainee Rudra is the ex-husband of Nikhil’s niece Swarna. Rudra and Swarna got married before two years. But the marriage was cut after one year. Rudra threatened Nikhil to kill for role of Nikhil’s in divorce. Police suspects Rudra’s role behind the killing. OC said that police is squeezing Rudra since morning.
Earlier police arrested three suspected persons in connection with minority tailor Nikhil Chandra Joardar’s killing. The detainees are identified as Rafiqul Islam Badsha secretary of Gopalpur poura Jamaat-e-Islami, BNP activist Jhantu Mia son of late Abdur Rashid of village Beer Nolhora under Gopalpur Upazila and Moulana Aminul Islam, super of Alamnagar Dakhil Madrasah of village Dattabari in Madhupur Upazila of the district. Aminul was arrested on Saturday night while the two others were arrested on Sunday morning Aminul Islam, also the Gopalpur correspondent of vernacular daily Inqilab, filed a case against Nikhil in May, 2012 for his derogatory remarks about Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). Nikhil had then served three months in jail for his disparaging comments. Later, Aminul withdrew the case on March, 2015.
Gulam Mahfijur Rehman, officer in-charge of Tangail Detective Branch of police told the newsmen that the three arrestees have been produced before court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Aunjan Kanti Das on Monday afternoon seeking seven days remand. The court granted three days (total six days) remand for each cases.
Police also speculated that grabbing land by the influential might be the cause of the murder. As Nikhil has no son. He has two daughters. But the equations have been changed as he was killed in a manner similar to that of several bloggers, rights activists and university teachers murdered in Bangladesh recently, machete-wielding attackers targeting the head to ensure immediate death.
Kobita daughter of the deceased told the journalists that the persons who plotted for her father’s jail are behind the killing. Aroti Joardar said that her husband had no enemy. Aroti Joarder, their daughters Kobita and Bonnoya seek Prime minister’s interference for justice. Commander of RAB-12 of 3 CPC Mohi Uddin Faruki said that they are investigating the matter taking the consideration of family feud, land related matters and militancy. Saleh Mohammed Tanvir, superintendent of police in Tangail, said they suspected militants were behind the killing but investigation is on to identify the perpetrators and determine their motive. He added that DB police, Police, RAB and PBI are investigating the case.
OC Abdul Jalil said that after autopsy from Sheikh Hasina Medical College in Tangail Nikhil was created at his village on Sunday. A wall writing in blue ink on the shutter of the tailoring shop gives clue of the murder. It was inscribed,’Adalot tomake mukti dileoy amra mukti debo na’. Nikhil’s family knew it, but he did not inform it to police for fear, Aroti told. Nikhil shared it with few neighbours. The wall writing proves the act of Islamic outfit militants, locals opined. Additional SP denied of IS’s involvement in the killing. They got no trace of IS in Bangladesh, he added.
President of Krisak Sramik Janata League Abdul Kader Siddiki BU visited the house of Nikhil and condoled the members of the bereaved family on Sunday. He told the journalists that political unrest, annihilation, absence of democracy are behind the killings. He urged the Government for proper inquiry of all recent killings including Nikhil and to bring the killers under justice.
Goplapur Upazila Parisad hold an emergency meeting on law and order situation chaired by UNO Masumur Rahman on Sunday. Upazila chairman Younus Islam Talukder, Mayor Rokibul Hoque Sana, AL president of Goplapur Upazila unit Halimuzzaman Talukder, local elite spoke on the occasion urging the law enforcers to arrest the killers. They sought commoners support in identifying and arrest of the killers.
Nikhil was hacked to death in front of his shop at Dubail 46 kms off from Tangail under Gopalpur Upazila by motorcycle-borne assailants on Saturday noon. The killers left a bag carrying four cocktails. The cocktails have been handed over to Army for defuse. The killers also left a blood stained shirt a few kms distance from the spot. Nikhil’s wife Aroti Joardar lodged a murder case against unidentified assailants on Saturday night, while police filed another case under Arms and Explosive Substances Act. Aroti Joarder has become speechless. Elder daughter Kabita suspects of proper judgment.
