16th Amendment verdict: Review to seek change in observations

Dhaka – The government will file a review petition seeking some changes in the observations made by the appellate division in the verdict repealing the 16th amendment to the constitution within 30 days of receiving the certified copy of the judgment.“We will file a review petition before the Appellate Division within 30 days of receiving the certified copy of the verdict, said Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq while talking to reporters after an agreement signing programme at Hotel Sonargaon.
He made this comments couple of days after the State received the certified copy of the verdict that annulled the 16th amendment to the constitution empowering the Parliament to remove judges for their inability or misconduct.
The Law Minister said if fail they would file delay condonation petition before the appellate division explaining the reasons for the delay.
Meanwhile, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam on Wednesday told reporters that they have received a certified copy of the verdict two-three days ago. The 799-page full verdict was published on August 1.
Deputy attorney general Ekramul Haque Tutul told reporters that the State sought certified copy on the very day of the announcement of the verdict.
The Appellate Division unanimously announced the verdict on July 3 upholding the High Court verdict scrapping the 16th amendment to the constitution.
The present Parliament brought the 16th amendment to the constitution on September 17, 2014, to empower it to remove judges. – Staff Reporter
