The Election Commission said Sunday 196 candidates will contest in the election of 13 upazila parishads on May 19.
The final list was announced a day after the deadline for quitting the race expired. Among the candidates 69 will fight for the chairman posts, 75 for vice chairman posts, and 52 for vice chairman posts exclusively reserved for women, according to information the Election Commission Secretariat received from the returning officers.
A total of 244 aspirants submitted nomination papers for 39 posts of the 13 upazilas in nine districts.
The 13 upazilas are Kaunia, Gangachara, Sadar and Pirgachha of Rangpur, Kamarkhand of Sirajganj, Taltali of Barguna, Rangabali of Patuakhali, Kalukhali of Rajbari, Bandar of Narayanganj, Gazipur Sadar, Basail of Tangail, Bijoynagar of Brahmanbaria and Adarsha Sadar and Sadar Dakkhin of Comilla. Besides, by-election for the chairman post Tarakanda upazila in Mymensingh will also be held on May 19.
The commission has completed elections in 459 out of the country’s 487 upazila parishads in five phases between February 19 and March 31 this year. – UNB
