2 alleged mugger, alleged robber killed in ‘gunfight’


An alleged mugger and an alleged robber were killed in separate incidents of gunfight with law enforces in Pabna and Comilla districts early Thursday.
In Pabna, a mugger was killed in a gunfight between his cohorts and police at Gokulnagar on the Ishwardi-Rajshahi Highway in Ishwardi upazila early in the morning.The deceased was identified as Jahangir Hossain,27, son of Mamtaj Malitha, a resident of the same village.
Biman Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Ishwardi Police Station, said a gang of muggers snatched away valuables from passengers of vehicles at gunpoint on the highway beside Raju Cinema Hall in the area at about 2:30 am. Informed, police conducted a drive in the area in a bid to arrest them.
Sensing the presence of police, the muggers opened fire on them, forcing them to hit back by firing, triggering a gunfight, leaving Jahangir injured.
He was rushed to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex where doctor referred him to Pabna Medical College Hospital. Later, he died on way to the hospital.
The body was sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy. Jahangir was wanted in several cases for snatching, the OC added.
In Comilla, a robber, Azad khan, 23, a resident of the city’s Ashoktala, was killed in a gunfight with Detective Brach (DB) of police in Alekharchar of Sadar upazila early in the morning.
Tipped off that a robber gang was planning to commit robbery in the area around 2:30am, a team of DB police launched a drive in the area in a bid to arrest them, DB police sources said.
Sensing the presence of the plainclothes police, Azad and accompanies opened fire on them, promoting law enforcers to fire back which triggered a gunfight between them.
Half an hour into the gunfight, Azad sustained injuries with bullets. He died on way to the hospital.
Later, the DB team arrested three robbers along with a revolver and home-made firearms from the spot. – UNB
