2 lakh marooned due to flooding in Sunamganj


Dhaka – The onrush of water from the hilly areas and incessant rainfall have flooded hundreds of villages in Doarbazar, Tahirpur and Bishwambharpur upazilas, leaving at least 200,000 people marooned.According to the Water Development Board (WDB) office of Sunamganj, the Surma has been flowing 90 centimetres above the danger line,UNB News Agency Reported.
Meanwhile, the Agriculture Extension Department of the district reported that a total 140 hectares of paddy saplings land have been
flooded.In Doarbazar, direct road communication between 30 villages and that of Chhatak upazila have been cut off from Doarbazar upazila headquarters, said sources at the Disaster Management office of the upazila.Besides, five thousand people were affected directly by the flood,while some 50,000 have been marooned.In Tahirpur, villagers have been experiencing scarcity of pure drinking water as most of the tube wells and other sources of drinking water have been affected by the flood.At least 10 villages of Sripur Uttar Union of the upazila went under flood water, said chairman of the union Alhaj Khashrul Alam.In Bishwambhar pur, at least 20,000 people were marooned due to the flood, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer M Talut.Contacted, Deputy Commissioner of the district Sheikh Rafiqul Islam said the district administration will distribute relief among the worst affected victims.
