Two teachers and 18 students of Begum Rokeya University — were injured as police swung into action on them to disperse their agitation for removal of theit Vice Chancellor AKM Nurun Nabi on Tuesday.
Witnesses said a section of teachers and students of the university had been on a hunger strike on the campus since February 8 demanding the removal of their vice-chancellor.There was an altercation when Jatiya Party city unit president Mostafizur Rahman Mostafa along with some locals asked the striking teachers and students to withdraw the strike around 7pm.
At one stage, they vandalised the strike podium. Later, the agitating teachers and students blocked the Rangpur-Kurigram road in protest against the vandalism.
On information, police rushed to the spot. They charged baton and lobbed 20 rounds of teargas shells to disperse the agitators, leaving two teachers and 18 students injured.
Of the injured, 5-6 people were taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. – UNB
