2009-type mutiny must not happen again:PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to ensure that a 2009 type mutiny does not happen ever again.
Her call came during an address on the BGB Raising Day at its headquarters on Sunday. In February 2009, a mutiny at the Peelkhana headquarters of the erstwhile Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) left the border guards in complete disarray.
As many as 72 people, including 57 army officers on deputation to the BDR were brutally killed by the mutineers.
After the horrendous incident, the force was reorganised as Border Guard Bangladesh.
During her address on Sunday, Hasina described the Feb 25, 2009, BDR mutiny as a ‘dark chapter’ in the country’s history.
“We managed to recover from the situation only through your collective efforts.”
Referring to the BDR carnage trials, she said, “The force now has completely been cleared of its stigma through the trials of the unruly and strayed [BDR] members involved in the mutiny.”
“We have been able to restore order, dignity and the reputation of this force, thanks to your hard work.”
Hasina urged the BGB to remain vigilant to ensure that there is never again a mutiny.
She then went on to highlight the force’s valiant role in the 1971 Liberation War and the steps her government had taken to make the BGB more efficient, tactful and effective.
Earlier in the morning, the prime minister took the salute from a BGB parade and handed over medals to 56 border guards for their service and bravery.
After the parade, she inaugurated three BGB hospitals in Chuadanga, Thakurgaon and Khagrachharhi, and unveiled the logo of the proposed Simanta Bank for the border guards.
