A trial tribunal in Rajshahi on Thursday convicted three persons and sentenced each of them to suffer life imprisonment for killing a cabbage-farmer in the city.
Judge of the Speedy Trial Tribunal Shamsul Alam Khan also fined the convicts – Towheed Hossain, Kabil alias Kabir and Aslam Hossain- Taka 10,000 each, in default, to suffer six months behind the bar in addition. The convicted killers of Lal Muhammad, a farmer of Aligonj village under Rajpara Police Station in the metropolis, were present in the court dock when the judge pronounced the verdict around 3.30pm.Besides, four other accused of the case- Emran Ali, Jamal Uddin, Jakir Hossain and Nurun Nahar Begum- were acquitted as the charge brought against them couldn’t be proved beyond doubt.According to the prosecution story, in brief, is that the accused in collaboration with each other killed Lal Muhammad in his bedroom in the night on November 21, 2009.  Shahjahan, Father-in-Law of the victim, had lodged a case with the police station concerned on the following day. Police pressed charges in the murder case accusing seven persons. The tribunal recorded statements of 21 prosecution witnesses. Special Public Prosecutor Entajul Haque Babu appeared in the case on behalf of the state while Advocates Shusanta Sarker, Abu Bakker and Nur-E-Aftab defended the accused. –BSS, Rajshahi
