3 held over alleged looting of goods from airport


Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested three alleged criminals from the city’s Mirpur area on Tuesday night in connection with the looting of goods from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after beating customs officials.
The arrestees were identified as Badrul Alam Shyamal, the ringleader of Shyamol Bahini, and his two associates Prince and Papon.Rab had tip-off that Shyamal and his accomplices, who attacked the customs officials in Cargo Complex of the airport and snatched goods, were staying in Mirpur Benarashi Palli, said sources at Rab-1.
Based on the information, a Rab-1 team conducted a drive in the area around 11:50 pm and arrested the gang members.
The arrestees used to import various goods illegally from abroad and get those released from airport threatening customs officials, the Rab sources said.
On August 10, members of ‘Shyamal Bahini’ looted 13 cartons of goods worth Tk 1 crore without bill of entry from courier unit of cargo village at the airport after beating customs officials.
They are involved in ‘C&F’ trading and the alleged kingpin, Shyamal, has been running a courier service company named ‘SMI’.
Assistant Revenue Officer (Customs) Md Shahjahan Ali filed a case with Airport Police Station on August 11 in this connection. – News Desk
