More than 50 students fell unconscious after being made to stand under the sun for hours to greet Pirojpur Sadar MP AKMA Awal.
The students of Karimunnessa Girls School say they waited at the school’s ground for three hours on Wednesday for Awal who was supposed to be present at 9am for a prize-giving ceremony.
The guardians of the sick students say the students arrived at 8:30am as directed by the school authority and waited under the blazing sun.The students began to fall unconscious, one by one, while singing the national anthem after the Pirojpur-1 MP finally arrived at 11:30am.
They were admitted to Sadar hospital and some had to be given oxygen.
Pirojpur Sadar Hospital’s Resident Physician Dr Shankar Kumar Ghosh said it was possibly a case of mass psychological illness.
“If two fall sick from the sun it might affect others too,” he said.
The students said they were having trouble breathing at one point but school authorities refused them water.
Jafar Ahmed, father to seventh grade student Humaira Islam, said his daughter was unconscious for an hour.
The school’s principal Md Abdul Halim said the students probably fell sick because they had empty stomachs and also went to their private tutors before coming to school in the morning.
He, however, could not explain why they were not given water. – bdnews24.com
