3 men held over Japanese murder

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) says it has arrested three men in Chapainawabganj for their suspected involvement in last month’s murder of Japanese national Kunio Hoshi. They are said to be activists of Rangpur’s Juba League and Juba Dal, having past criminal records. Two small firearms, bullets and machetes were seized from them, Rab-5 Commander Lt Col Mahbub Alam told the media on Friday. The three arrested men are pro-BNP Juba Dal’s Rangpur metropolitan unit members Rajib Hasan Sumon, alias Meril Sumon, 28, and Naoshad Hossain Rubel aka ‘Black Rubel’, 36, and the city’s pro-Awami League Juba League member Kajal Chandra Barman, alias ‘Vorosa’.“They have admitted to their involvement in the killing during initial questioning,” Alam claimed. He said the three had been picked up from Bidirpul and Noyagola on Thursday night.Motorcycle-borne assailants had shot dead Kunio Hoshi in Rangpur on Oct 3, within a few days of a similar fatal attack on an Italian in Dhaka’s diplomatic zone.

The government had rubbished reports of the militant group, Islamic State, claiming responsibility for the killings.RAB Commander Alam said the men were “on the run since Hoshi’s murder” and had been “changing location frequently”.All three had previous criminal cases, including those of murder and mugging, pending against them, he said.RAB has handed them over to the Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station, charging them with illegal possession of firearms.Their families, however, claim they had been picked up by ‘plainclothesmen’ last month, but both Rangpur police and RAB-13 have denied the allegations.“They will be shown arrested in the murder case and brought to Rangpur,” DIG Humayun Kabir, who heads a police probe, told bdnews24.com.
