As candicates have collected nomination papers for the city elections in Dhaka and Chittagong, the pulse of the atmosphere in the two primier cities of the country have started going up.
On Sunday food minister Quamrul Islam in an apparent reply to the demand made by Bnp leaders and sympathisers has said that level playing field for the elections was not possible.Former president and Bikalpa Dhara chief Prof. Badruddoza Chowdhury has said that voters would avange the ‘voterless election’ of 05 January 2014 in the election of the three city corporations – two in Dhaka and one in Chittagong.
Meanwhile, Prof. Emajuddin Ahmed has said that the people would not tolerate a repeat of the 05 January elections in the April 28 elections in the two cities of Dhaka and Chittagong.
A total of 349 candidates have collected nomination forms for the elections to three – Dhaka South, Dhaka North and Chittagong – city corporations slated for April 28.
Election Commission sources said 233 candidates out of 349 probable contestants submitted their nomination papers for the polls till 5pm today. Tomorrow is the last date for submitting nomination.
“Till date, 28 probable mayoral, 161 reserved councilor and 823 general councilor candidates collected nomination forms for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC),” returning officer of DNCC Md Shah Alam told journalists.
Earlier, returning officer of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) said 30 candidates for the mayoral post, 208 for reserved councilor posts and 1128 for general councilor posts collected their nominations till this afternoon.
Meanwhile, returning officer of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Abdul Baten informed BSS that 18 mayoral candidates, 94 reserved councilor and 559 general councilor candidates bought nomination forms till date.
The EC source said 23,98,432 voters of 36 wards in DNCC, 18,90,951 voters of 57 wards in DSCC and 18,22,892 voters of CCC will elect three mayors and other ward representatives in the upcoming elections to three city corporations.
