4 fishermen jailed in Laxmhipur for catching jatka


A mobile court here on Friday sentenced to four fishermen to one year jail each for catching banned Hilsha fish fry- Jatka- in the Meghna River.Fisheries department sources said Executive Magistrate Azizur Rahman, also UNO of Sadar Upazila, awarded the punishment to the fishermen-Abdul Malek, 35, son of Abdul Alim, Amir Hossain,18, son of Fazlul Hoque,Mohammad Saddam Hossain, 23, son of Joynal Abdin, and Abdul Gani, 30, son of Ali Ahammed, of Komalnagar Upazila.A joint team of fisheries officials and coastguard personnel of the district, led by Fisheries Official Mohammad Alikuzzaman, arrested the four fishermen with 15,000 meters of gill nets during a daylong drive from different spots of the Meghna River.The seized gill nets were burnt in presence of the concerned officials and locals.According to the existing fishing law, catching Jatka, Hilsha fish less than 9 inches, is banned for 8 months from November 1 to June 30. The law has been in force for the last two years to increase fish production in the country. -BSS, Laxmipur
