42 km tailback: Why should it recur on Dhaka-Ctg Highway

Comilla, Mar 31 – A 42-kilometer long tailback was created on Dhaka-Chittagong highway on Saturday due to heavy pressure of vehicles, causing immense sufferings to the commuters.Several hundred vehicles were stuck on both sides on the busy highway stretching from Madanpur of Narayanganj to Daudkandi Upazila of Comilla.
Vehicles ply through the four-lane highway have to cross two-lane Daudkandi, Meghna and Kanchpur bridges that slows down speed of vehicles on the highway, said highway police.
Shoyeb, a banker, said he started journey for Dhaka from Chittagong at 2:00 am. He reached Daudkandi Toll plaza when it was 11:18 am. “Usually I cross it early in the morning when travel to Dhaka by night coach. I don’t know when I will reach Dhaka,” he added.
Abul Kalam Azad, Officer-in-charge of Daudlkandi Highway Police Station, said the tailback started on Thursday night and the situation did not improve till 10 am due to heavy pressures of vehicles.
Police are trying to ease the traffic movement, said the OC.
A scrutiny would however show that the traffic jam on the premier highway of the country is due to unregulated traffic. In most cases traffic jam starts at an intersection when one transport vehicle crosses the highway mindless of its effect on the flow of traffic on its main lanes. Overtaking adds to the problem as this blocks the other lane thus compounding the traffic jam and force the tailback grow long.
Regular overseeing of the highway crossing by transport vehicles at intersections, and strict check on over-speeding and illegal overtaking are bound to free the highway from this unwanted gridlock, says an experienced observer. On Saturdays and Thursdays traffic load becomes heavier, but not beyond its carrying capacity. Obstruction of movement on the main lanes of the highway trigger traffic jam that grows long in no time, he adds- UNB
