The 48-hour strike enforced by the District Truck Workers Union protesting attack on its president Bala Mia by Detective Branch (DB) of police is being observed peacefully in the district on its first day Monday.
Most of the trucks, tank lorries, covered vans, pickups, mini trucks and dump trucks stayed off the streets as the strike began. No major untoward incident was reported from anywhere as of filing this report at 12:00pm. The union leaders demanded arrest of the DB policemen responsible for
the attack on Bala Mia within 48 hours and also threatened to stop plying of all kinds of vehicles unless their demand was met within the deadline. The strike was called from a rally of the “Truck Workers Union” held at local Shaheed Minar chatter on Sunday. The union leaders alleged that a team of DB police beat up their president Bala Mia at Gharinda in the district town on October 5, leaving him injured. –UNB, Tangail
