Dhaka – Five-year-old boy Nirob who fell into a manhole in the city’s Shyampur area on Tuesday afternoon has died.
Doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital declared him dead when he was taken to the hospital after being rescued from the Buriganga River in a unconscious state, said Dr Dalia.
Fire Service divers rescued Nirob from the Buriganga River at Palpara, around 2 kilometres off the manhole, at around 8:20pm.Nirob, son of Rezaul of Shyampur area, slipped into the manhole near Shyampur Jagarani Club around 4:20 pm as he was playing there with two other kids — Ratul and Hridoy.
Later, seven units of firefighters, including a team of divers, rushed to the spot and tried to rescue the minor boy by launching a search inside the sewerage line linked to the manhole.
Muzammel Haque, deputy director (Dhaka Division) of Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the rescuers searched about 1 km sewerage tunnel before launching a search where the sewerage line met the Buriganga.
Meanwhile, Robin, a local businessman, claimed that another minor boy fell into the same manhole six months ago and faced the fate of Nirob.
The body of that boy was recovered one day later from the Buriganga River, he said adding that though the authorities were informed about the incident, no step was taken to cover the manhole. – News Desk
