8 killed 40 hurt as bus plunges into ditch in Barisal

At least Eight people were killed and 40 injured as a bus lost control and plunged into a roadside ditch at Biswasbari in Rajapur upazila of Barisal district on Tuesday afternoon.
Four deceased passengers out of the eight so far have been identified as Advocate Mukul Ranjan Singha of Barisal (60), Shawn, 35, hailed from Lebukhali under Patuakhali district, Kulsum, 26, wife of deceased Shawn and Abul Kalam, 45, hailed from Mehendiganj under Barisal district.According to messages received in Dhaka a Barisal-bound bus Rupam of Dhansiri Transport company left Khulna and plunged into a ditch as the passenger-packed vehicle was crossing an under-construction bridge instead of taking the alternative way at Biswasbari in Razapur upazila of the district.
“Eight passengers died instantly,” officer-in-charge of Rajapur police station AZM Masuduzzaman has been quoted to have said.
He said the 20 injured passengers were rushed to Rajapur Upazila Health Complex and Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. The witnesses said the bus plunged into the ditch at around 4 pm as its driver visibly lost control over the wheels.
Police and the Fire Brigade officials were trying to recover the bus till the report filling late Tuesday evening.
Deputy Commissioner of Jhalakati M Shakawat Hossain and Police Super M Mazid Ali were at the rescue operation site.
