Police in a drive arrested nine local leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami from a meeting allegedly they were holding secretly at Shologhar in Srinagar upazila on Thursday night.
The arrestees were identified as MA Malek, 54, acting secretary of Srinagar upazila unit Jamaat, Mohammad Laknur Rahman, 30, president of Sramik Kalyan Federation of Jamaat and activists of the Islamist party Chandu Mia, 42, Mohammad Ali Nur, 43, Mohamamd Mosharaf Sheikh, 55, Mohamamd Shamim Mollah, 41, Mohamamd Omar Faruk Molla, 50, Hatem Ali, 42 and Mohamamd Shamim Molla, 28.
Sheikh Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Srinagar Police Station, said acting on secret information that some activists of Jamaat were holding a clandestine meeting in the area, police conducted a drive in the area and arrested them at about 10:30 pm.
The Jamaat activists then also hurled two crude bombs for fleeing safely.
Police also recovered 11 crude bombs from the spot.
The Jamaat men gathered in the area in a bid to carry out subversive activities.
Additional police members have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble.-UNB, Narayanganj
