The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) cannot carry out inquiries into all the graft allegations received by the Commission for lack of resources, its chairman Ghulam Rahman said Wednesday.

“The ACC conducted inquires into 40 graft allegations last year while it sent 35 allegations to the authorities concerned to initiate departmental probe,” he told the ‘ACC Media Award 2013’ ceremony held at the ACC auditorium marking the Corruption Prevention Week.

Editor of The Independent Mahbubul Alam, editor of Samakal Golam Sawrar, chief editor and chief executive of Boishakhi Television Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul and ACC commissioner Badiuzzman, among others, spoke at the function.

About widespread corruption, the ACC chairman said the mode of corruption has been changing in the county.

“Once it was thought government officials were involved in corruption… Hall-Mark Group is not a government body. It was involved in corruption in collusion with some government officials.”

He said a thousand kinds of irregularities have emerged in the country and people identify these as corruption. “But the ACC cannot conduct inquiries into all the allegations. It can only carry out probe in case of allegations falling under its schedule of offences.”

About the ACC activities, Ghulam Rahman said the anti-graft body has already filed a number of cases against Destiny Group and Hall-Mark Group. “Another 100 cases will be filed against Hall-Mark Group.”

He hoped that the ACC will soon submit charge-sheets against Destiny Group and Hall-Mark Group.

The ACC chairman urged the media and the civil society to play a strong role as vanguard in fighting graft and free the nation from corruption
