ACC starts inquiry against JS Chief Whip, brother

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has started an inquiry against Chief Whip of Parliament ASM Feroze and his brother ABM Reza over their alleged involvement with loan forgery.
The commission had asked the chief whip and his brother to appear before the commission along with the Sonali Bank managing director Pradip Kumar Dutta on Monday but they were not present by the date as they are now abroad.Chief whip’s elder brother Abul Moksud Mohammad Farhad on Monday told reporters that he informed the commission officials that his brothers now in abroad and they would contact with the officials concerned after back home.
ACC sources said that in assistance with the Sonali Bank board of directors the chief whip got remission on interest rates over TK 13.5 crore against loan taken by his Patuakhali Jute Mills Limited.
Emerging from the commission Sonali Bank MD Pradip Kumar said Feroze, the owner of Patuakhali Jute Mills Limited has took the loan in 1989.
“The owner of the Jute Mills rescheduled the loan one after another. I am not aware about the matter as I am recently involved with the process,” he added.
He however said that Feroze was due to pay Tk 1.50 crore as down payment to meet his bank liability.
According to ACC sources, Patuakhali Jute Mills Limited managing director ASM Feroz, also lawmaker from Patuakhali-2 parliamentary constituency borrowed Tk 1.20 crore from the Sonali Bank’s foreign exchange corporate branch in 1989 mortgaging his M/s Patuakhali Jute Mills Limited to run the mills.
The company owed about Tk 28 crore with interest to the bank, before regularisation of the loan on November 27, sources added.
ACC officials said Feroze had got the limit of the loan increased and the loan renewed and rescheduled on eight occasions in violation of the banking rules by misusing his political power.
The Sonali Bank board of directors decided to exempt Feroz from paying over Tk 13.51 crore in interest on November 4, 2013 just a couple of month ago before the January 5 general elections, they said.
ASM Feroze has been elected MP for six times from Patuakhali-2 constituency. He came to Parliament first time in 1979 during the tenure of Ziaur Rahman’s BNP.
He joined Awami League (AL) after winning as an independent candidate in the 1986 election. – Staff Reporter
