Agora shop chief given 2 years in jail for adulterated ghee

Dhaka, 28 Dec – In a rare verdict, chairman of super chain shop Agora Niaz Rahim has been sentenced for two years in prison and fined Tk 50,000 in two cases on charge of selling adulterated ghee.Special Metropolitan Judge of Pure Food Court Md Mahbub Sobhani yesterday gave the verdict in two cases filed against him some nine years back.
If fails to provide fine, the Agora owner will have to serve more one month in the prison, says the verdict.
The court set up at 10th floor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) asked to send Niaz Rahim to central jail at Keraniganj in the Dhaka.
Naiz Rahim is a director of business group Rahim Afroj. He also discharges as chairman of several company of the group.
The court found him guilty for selling adulterated food item like ghee as two cases were filed in this connection in 2008.
The Agora owner went to High Court challenging the Pure Food Court order. Later, he filed a writ petition with the Supreme Court as the HC rejection of his appeal, sources said.
According to sources, several mobile courts conducted by different state-run organizations fined Agora in different times for selling adulterated food items and commodities with expired date. – Staff Reporter
