AL activists obstruct Khaleda’s campaign in Dhaka city


Hundreds ofAwami League (AL) supporters tried to obstruct BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia fromcampaigning for Dhaka North City Corporation mayoral candidate Tabith Awalin Uttara yesterday.They staged black flag
demonstrations at different places in Uttara and tried to encircle Khaleda’s motorcade, which was followed by BNP activists riding on some 25 to30 motorcycles.
When Khaleda and herentourage reached Uttara Section-1, they were greeted with a black flag demonstration by AL leaders and workers. The demonstrators were led by local AL president Tofazzal and general secretary Habib Hasan. They also triedto stop her from moving further and raised slogans: “Why my brothers were killed? We want an explanation from Khaleda. The ghost of Pakistan must go back to Pakistan.”At this point,the policemen accompanying the former prime minister and her personal securityescorted her out of the area to safely.Later, the BNPchairperson went ahead with her campaign at SB Plaza and Amir Complex at Uttara section number 3. Hundreds of party leaders and activists accompanied Khaledaduring her election campaign.Witnesses said Khaleda failed to visit Abdullahpur due to the obstruction by the black flag wielding demonstrators, who tried to shake the vehicles carrying her security and hurled black flags towards the motorcade.The motorcade again faced a black flag demonstration while taking a U-turn from Amir Plazaat Uttra section number-7. One of the demonstrators threw a stick towards the motorcade. It, however, missed Khaleda’s vehicle but landed on the vehicle of her securitymen.
After her return from Uttra, Khaleda also tookpart in election campaigning at Jamuna Future Park.Khaleda talked to people at Uttara, Mirpur and Mohammadpur,exhorting them to vote for Awal. On Saturday, she had
campaigned inGulshan, Mohakhali and Hatirjheel areas.
Khaleda came out of her Gulshan residence around 4.30 pm to carryout the election campaign.
Later, Khaleda went to city’s Norda for electioneering and later talked to reporters where she said many obstacles are being created in their electioneering.
“But I don’t care—people are with us. Awami League has become mad to see Tabith’s popularity in the election. They [AL men] are carrying out criminal activities,” Khaleda told reporters after wrapping up her last night’s electioneering at Norda.
Talking to voters at Suvastu Nazar Valley, Shajahadpur in Badda, she said they are getting huge response in spite of government’s barriers.
“Revolution will take place if voters can cast their votes properly on the polls day,” she said adding that BNP is demanding army deployment during polls to hold the city corporation election in a free and fair manner.
“But Awami League does not want to deploy army as they have planned to rig in the election,” she said.
No untoward incident took place as police and the BNP chief’s security personnel forced them to stay away from the motorcade, said Sayrul Kabir Khan, a media wing staff of the BNP chief. – Staff Reporter
