AL also to be victim of killing, disappearance: Abbas

BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas on Sunday said the Awami League (AL) would also fall victim to killing and forced disappearance just the same way they were now running the country.
“The new generation did not see how the AL in the past resorted to killings. The people had almost forgotten the past but the present regime reminded them of it once again. They now put even the Hitler and Mussolini era behind,” he said while addressing a protest meeting at the National Press Club.Quoting from the book of Sharmin, a daughter of Tajuddin Ahmed, the late prime minister, he said, Tajuddin Ahmed cautioned Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib that the survival of both him and them would be at stalk because the way the country was country being run.
“No more protest meeting in closed door room; rather preparation has to be taken to free party leaders and activists from prisons. The government turned the entire country into a greater jail,” he added.
Abbas said they would take to the streets again and all prisoners would be freed by waging movement and forcing the government to quit.
The meeting was arranged by the Chatra Dal’s Dhaka city south unit demanding withdrawal of false cases against Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman and release of BNP leaders Aman, Pintu, Sohel, Habib and others.
Presided over by Mirza Aslam, senior vice president of the unit, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by Asaduzzaman Ripon, Abul Khair Bhuiyan, Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, Helen Jerin and Sultan Salah Uddin Tuku.
Meanwhile, a scheduled view exchange meeting of BNP and its associate organisations could not take place because of misunderstanding and altercation among the leaders.
The meeting was scheduled to be held at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan Office in Gulshan at 1:00am and party acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was present at the venue in time.
A number of leaders and activists of 38 associate organizations led by of Major (Retd) Hanif thronged in front of the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office from 10:00am to join the meeting though only president and secretary of the respective organization were invited to take part in it, according to party sources.
Fakhrul was visibly annoyed with such a huge audience turning up and sought explanation from leaders of associate organisations as to why they came up with so many leaders and activists. There was an angry exchange between the BNP and alliance leaders over the presence and the meeting, sources added.
At one stage the BNP acting secretary general left the venue saying that the meeting will take place later on. Leaders of 38 associate organizations under the banner of Sohojogi Oiky Parisahd expressed their disappointment over the embarrassing situation. They also staged a short demonstration over there protesting the incident.
Another sources said the meeting was closed door one but media was also invited without informing the BNP acting secretary general that made him annoyed.
Sohojogi Oiky Parisahd  leaders including Dr Nayon Bangali, Mia Mohammad Anwar, AKM Rakibul Islam Ripon, Shahid Mostafa Jalal, among others, were present on the occasion. – Staff Reporter
