Dhaka – Awami League candidates were unofficially elected mayors in all 10 municipalities of nine districts that went to polls on Sunday.The balloting was held from 8am to 4pm without any break.
In Bhanga municipality of Faridpur, AL mayoral candidate Abu Foyez Md Reza was elected mayor for the fourth term defeating his nearest rival independent candidate Abu Zafar Munshi by a margin of over 3,000 votes.
Reza bagged 10,401 votes while Zafar polled 7,124, according to the unofficial result declared by returning officer Faridul Islam.
In Brahmanbaria, AL candidate Nayer Kabir won the mayoral post pocketing 60,167 votes while his nearest rival BNP candidate Hafizur Rahman got 7,281 votes.
In Nangalkot of Comilla, ruling party contester Abdul Malek was elected unofficially obtaining 10,936 votes while his nearest rival independent candidate (known as BNP rebel) Anwar Hossain polled 1,234. BNP candidate Jahangir Alam bagged only 527 votes.
In Kaliganj of Jhenidah, Moksed Ali Laskar of AL got 12,128 votes to defeat his nearest candidate AL rebel Masudur Rahman Mantu polled 8,112.
In Jhalakati, AL candidate Liakat Ali won the mayoral post pocketing 17,320 votes while his nearest rival independent candidate but known as AL rebel Md Abzal Hossain got only 2,914 votes. BNP candidate Anadi Das got 1,797 votes.
In Kabirhat of Noakhali, AL candidate Jahirul Haque Raihan was elected unofficially obtaining 5,374 votes while his nearest BNP candidate Mostafizur Rahman Monju polled 2,240.
In Sonagazi of Feni, AL candidate Rafiqul Islam Khokon won the mayoral post bagging 8,994 votes while his nearest BNP candidate Jamal Uddin Shentu got 850 votes.
In Chakaria of Cox’s Bazar, AL candidate Alamgir Chowdhury was elected unofficially securing 28,352 votes while his nearest BNP candidate Nurul Haidar polled 8845.
In Maheshkhali, AL candidate Maksud Miah won the mayoral post bagging 8,430 votes while his nearest AL rebel candidate Sarowar Azam got 6496 votes.
In Haragachha of Rangpur, AL candidate Habibur Rahman Master won the mayoral post getting 12,242 votes while his nearest BNP candidate Monayem Sarkar Faruk polled 11,084.
Earlier on December 30 last, election to 234 municipalities, out of the country’s 323, was held with the participation of 20 political parties.- Age-ncies
