AL candidates leads municipal polls,EC says fair election


Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Wednesday claimed that the countrywide municipal elections were held fairly barring some stray incidents.“The elections were held fairly except some stray incidents as we had been alert from the beginning so that no irregularities can take place,” he said while talking to reporters at the Election Commission Media Centre around 8:30pm.

The CEC said elections to 233 out of 234 municipalities were held while the election in other municipality has been postponed. “Now, votes are being counted.”He also said they received many information from the media and took actions accordingly.

Seventy-three 78 Awami League, nine AL rebel and three BNP candidates won the mayoral posts in 95 municipalities in different districts in the elections held on Wednesday.

Besides, two independent mayoral candidates, a Jatiya Party contender, a BNP rebel and a pro-Jamaat contestant won the mayoral posts, according to unofficial results.

Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said voting in 50 out of total 3,554 centres has been postponed for various reasons. “Of them, voting in all the centres of Madhabdi municipality in Narsingdi has been put on hold,” he said.

He said the EC observed the election throughout the day. “The returning officers have already sent their reports to the EC.”

The CEC said they received a number of allegations during the election and took cognisance of those with importance. “We had also been able to take actions after verification.”

About voter turnout, he said the turnout was good in many municipalities. He also said they could know the percentage of turnout by midnight.

Replying to a query, Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said they took actions against those who tried to cast fake votes. “Many were jailed and fined.”

Asked whether he is satisfied with the elections, he said, “There’s nothing to be satisfied or dissatisfied. It’s my job. We’re doing it. We’re doing our job properly.”

About violence, the CEC said the country’s political culture has not yet been changed.

He also expressed the hope that a healthy culture will develop in the country in the future.

In Kurigram, AL’s Md Adbul Jalil was elected unofficially bagging 18675 votes, as his nearest BNP’s Nurul Islam Nuru got 16,225 votes in Kurigram municipality, and Jatiya Party mayoral candidate Abdul Rahman was elected mayor in Nageshwari municipality bagging 10,286 votes while his nearest AL’s Mohammad Hossain Faku got 8905 votes.

In Lalmonirhat, ruling party candidate Shamsher Ali (7052 votes) won the election defeating BNP candidate Sanauzzaman (3904 votes) in Patgram upazila.

In Thakurgaon, AL candidate Alamgir Sarkar (5083 votes) won the polls defeating independent candidate Mokarram Hossain (3616 votes) in Ranishagkail, AL candidate Kashirul Alam (5754 votes) won defeating BNP’s Rajiur Rahman (5136 votes) in Pirganj municipality.

In Rangpur, AL candidate Uttam Kumar (6992 votes) won against independent candidate Azizul Haque (5995 votes) in Badarganj.

In Dinajpur, AL’s NAM Jamil Hossain Chalanta (8,989) outplayed his nearest rival BNP’s Shakhawat Hossain Shilpi (4,912) in Hakimpur municipality, independent candidate Jamaat leader Maulana Mohammad Hanif (4,500) won against AL’s Mosharraf Hossain Babul (3,848) in Birganj and independent candidate and sitting mayor Murturza Sarkar Manik against AL’s Shahjahan Sarkar Putu in Phulbari municipality.

In Rajshahi, AL’s Abdul Malek (5,254) won against BNP’s Abdur Razzak Pramanik (4,321) in Bhabaniganj, while AL’s Abdul Majid (5,805) against BNP’s Hafizur Rahman (4,440) in Kakonhat, AL’s Tofazzal Hossain (8088) against AL rebel Hasanuzzaman Santu (4,727) in Durgapur, AL’s candidate Abul Kalam Azad (7,946) against BNP Abu Nayeem Md Shamsur Rahman Mintu (3,181) in Taherpur, and AL’s candidate Shahiduzzaman (7,343) against independent candidate Jamaat leader Hafizur Rahman Akanda (4,996) in Keshorehat.

In Bogra, AL rebel and sitting mayor AJM Badsha (3,900) was unofficially elected defeating BNP’s Alimuddin Harun Mondal (2,464) in Dhunat, BNP’s candidate and sitting mayor Saiful Islam (7,171) won against independent contender Abdul Jalil (2,236) in Gabtoli, AL’s Alamgir Shahi Sumon (5,776) against BNP’s Tipu Sultan in Sariakandi, BNP rebel Quamrul Hasan Siddiqui Jewel (4,443) against BNP’s Shushanta Kumar Shanta (4,336) in Nandigram, AL’s Helal Uddin Kabiraj (4,759) against BNP’s Abdul Mannan in Kahalu, BNP’s Tofazzel Hossain (8,869) against AL’s Rashedul Islam Raja (8,285), AL’s Abdus Sattar (8,616) against BNP’s Swadhin Kumar Kundu in Sherpur, AL’s Towhidur Rahman Manik (7,364) against BNP’s Matiur Rahman Matin (5,987) in Shibganj municipality.

In Joypurhat, AL candidate Mostafizur Rahman Mostaque (23475 votes) defeated BNP’s Principal Shamsul Haque (12285 votes) in Joypurhat, AL candidate Golam Mahfuz Chowdhury (6,600 votes) won against BNP’s Rezaul Karim (3,855 votes) in Akkelpur, and AL’s Halimul Alam John (6,844 votes) defeated BNP’s Sazzadur Rahman Sohel (2,166 votes) in Kalai municipality.

In Natore, AL candidate Shahnawaz (9,054) defeated BNP rebel (5,094) in Gurudaspur, while BNP candidate Nazrul Islam (4915 votes) defeated AL candidate Rukhshana Mortuza (3992) in Gopalpur, AL candidate Shafique Uddin (3015) defeated BNP candidate Abbas Ali Nannu (1695) in Naldanga municipality and AL candidate Jannatul Ferdous (14601) defeated BNP candidate Shamim Al Razi (4277 votes) in Singair municipality.

In Pabna, AL rebel Quamrul Islam (30,547) won against AL’s Rakib Hasan Tipu (24,654) in Pabna, while AL’s Golam Hasnail Russel (4,866) against BNP’s Mujibur Rahman (3,115) in Bhangura, AL rebel Mirza Rezaul Karim Dulal (3,538) against BNP rebel Abdul Mannan (2,903) in Chatmohar, AL’s Quamruzzaman Majed (3,995) against BNP’s Enamul Haque (3,485) in Faridpur, AL’s Abdul Wahab (6,143) against AL rebel Tofazzel Hossain Tofa (5,600) in Sujanagar, AL’s Abul Kalam Azad (26,913) against BNP’s Mokhlesur Rahman (9,372) in Ishwardi, AL’s Mirazul Islam Pramanik (12,586) against BNP’s Sirajul Islam (8087) in Santhia municipality.

In Meherpur, independent mayoral candidate but known as Awami League rebel Ashraful Islam won the election in Gangni municipality defeating party’s candidate Ahmed Ali. Ashraful Islam polled 7,380 votes, while his nearest rival Ahmed Ali 5,416.

In Kushtia, AL candidates were elected mayors unofficially in all the five municipalities in the district. Haji Anwar Ali (67,022) won against BNP’s Kutubuddin (35,128) in Kushtia municipality, while Shamsuzzaman Arun (8,433) against BNP’s Tariqul Islam (2,711) in Kumarkhali, Tariqul Islam Tarique (5,719) against independent Masum Morshed Shanta (3,275) in Khoksha, Haji Shamimul Islam (7,451) against JSD’s Abdul Alim Swapan (3,784) in Behramara and Haji Enamul Haq (8,971) against independent Abul Hashem (1,884) in Mirpur.

In Chuadanga, independent mayoral candidate, known as AL rebel, Jahangir Alam, was elected unofficially bagging 6,408 votes, as his nearest rival BNP’s Nawab Ali got 3024 votes in Jibannagar municipality.

In Jhenidah, AL candidate Shahinur Rahman Ritnu (8,240 votes) won the election defeating BNP’s Zinnatul Haque (3,712) in Harinakunda municipality, independent candidate Zahidul Islam (6656) defeated BNP candidate Salauddin bulbul (5609 votes) in Kotchandpur municipality, while ruling party candidate Abdur Rashid khan (9871) defeated independent candidate Shahidul Islam (2988 votes) in Moheshpur, and AL’s Ashraful Azam (14,996) won against BNP’s Khalilur Rahman (4,622) in Shailakupa.

In Khulna, AL’s Kumar Biswas who bagged 4,935 votes won the mayoral post defeating his nearest rival independent contestant Achinta Kumar Mondal, known as AL rebel who polled 2,519 votes in Chalna municipality, while AL’s Selim Jahangir (6,388 votes) outplayed his nearest rival BNP’s GM Abdus Sattar (2,603) in Paikgachha.

In Bagerhat: AL’s candidate SM Monirul Haque (7,872) won the election against his nearest rival BNP’s Abdul Majid Hawlader (1,362) in Morelganj municipality.

In Barisal, AL’s Suvash Chandra (5,649) won against BNP’s Mahmudur Rahman (403) in Banaripara, AL’s Kamal Uddin Khan (12,007) against Islamic Andolan’s Jahangir Hossain (1,567) in Mehendiganj, and AL’s Shafiquzzaman (9,358) against BNP’s Asad Mahmud (596) in Muladi.

In Jhalakati, AL’s Taslim Uddin (13,420) was elected against BNP’s Mujibur Rahma (635) in Nalchity.

In Pirojpur, Awami League’s candidate Golam Kabir, who bagged 7,418 votes, won the election defeating BNP’s Shafiqul Islam (1784 votes) in Swarupkathi municipality.

In Bhola, AL’s Mohammad Moniruzzaman (21,132) won against BNP’s Harun-Or Rashid (1,727) in Bhola municipality, while AL’s Rafiqul Islam (6056) against BNP’s Moniruzzaman Kabir (643) in Burhanuddin, AL’s Zakir Hossain Talukder (6,974) against BNP’s Anwar Hossain Kakon (679) in Daulatkhan.

In Shariatpur, the ruling AL candidates won all the five municipalities in the district. AL Rafiqul Islam Kotwal (16,850) defeated BNP’s Nasiruddin Kalu (3,816) in Shariatpur municipality, while AL Yunus Bepari (3,833) won against AL rebel Khokan Talukder (2,800) in Jajira, AL’s Haider Ali (6,158) against independent M Shohidul Islam (4,465) in Naria, AL’s Abdul Mannan Hawlader (3,357) against BNP’s ABM Mostafiz (1,271) in Bhedarganj and AL’s Humayun Kabir Bacchu (4,762) against BNP’s Alamgir Madbar (3,062) in Damurda.

In Faridpur, AL’s Rayhan Uddin (4,199) won against BNP’s Saiful Islam Mukul (1,233) in Nagarkanda municipality, while AL rebel Mozaffar Hossain (7,590) against BNP’s Abdus Shukur Sheikh (5,779) in Boalmari.

In Magura, AL’s Khurshed Haider (27,960) won against BNP’s Iqbal Akter (15,496) in Magura municipality.

In Netrakona, AL candidate Nazrul Islam Khan (26664 votes) won in the election defeated BNP’s SM Moniruzzaman Dudu (11844 votes) in Netrakona municipality, AL candidate Asadullah Bhuiyan (7412 votes) defeated BNP Shafiqul Islam ( 20435 votes) in Kendua, AL rebel Abdul Hannan Talukdar shamim 3791 (votes) won the election against BNP Maspikur Rahman Khan (1748 votes) in Madan, AL candidate Hazi Abdus Salam (7837) defeated BNP’s Hazi Jamal Uddin (4321 votes) in Durgapur and AL’s adv Latifur Rahman (8414) defeated BNP’s Mahbubunnabi Sheikh (4364 votes ) in Mohanganj.

In Sherpur, AL candidate Golam Mohammad Kibria Liton (23,407) won in the election defeating BNP’s Abdur Razzak Ashish (23,140) in Sherpur municipality, while AL candidate Hafizur Rahman Liton (7704) defeated independent candidate known as AL rebel Nure Alam Sidique (5123) in Nakla municipality, and AL’s Abu Bakkar (4,721) against BNP’s Anwar Hossain (3,871) in Nalitabari municipality.

In Kishoreganj, AL’s Abul Hasan (9344) defeated BNP’s Shafiuddin (7585) in Kuliarchar, while AL’s Fakhrul Alam (30,593) won against his nearest rival BNP’s Md Shahin (19,953) in Bhairab, AL’s Parvez Mia (22,977) against BNP’s Mazharul Islam (17,859) in Kishoreganj, AL’s Abdul Kaiyum (4,872) against independent Syed Hossain (4427) in Hossainpur, AL’s Shawkat Osman (12,918) against BNP’s Tofazzel Hossain Khan (7,255) in Katiadi, AL’s Anwar Hossain (10,164) against BNP’s Ihsan Kufia (4,162) in Bajitpur, and AL rebel Abdul Kaiyum (10,186) against AL’s candidate Quamrul Islam (4,916) in Karimganj.

In Sunamganj, AL’s Ayub Bakht Joglul (14,533) was elected mayor by defeating independent Ganiul Saladin (10,434) in Sunamganj municipality while AL’s Abul Kalam Chowdhury (10,826) won against AL rebel Abdul Wahid Mojnu (4,651) in Chhatak and AL’s Mosharraf Mia (7,442) won against BNP’s Moinuddin Chowdhury (6,525) in Dirai.

In Brahmanbaria, Awami League’s candidate Takjil Khalifa Kajol, who bagged 14,699 votes, won the election defeating BNP’s Mamtaj Mian (3023 votes) in Akhaura municipality.

In Chandpur, AL candidate Awlad hossain liton (23965) won in the election defeated BNP candidate Enamul haque badal (7685) in Matlab municipality, AL candidate Mahbubul alam lipon (12978) defeated BNP candidate Abdul Mannan Khan Bachchu (12194 votes) in Hajiganj municipality and ruling AL candidate Nazmul alam sopon (10734) defeated BNP candidate Humayun Rahman Prodhan (1475) in Kachua municipality and Mahfuzul Haque of AL won the election (7082) against BNP candidate (5325).

In Laxmipur, AL candidate Abul Khair, who bagged 19657 votes, won the election while BNP candidate Roman hossain bagged 2039 votes in Ramganj municipality, and AL candidate Mesbah Uddin (9867) won the election defeating Jatiya Party candidate Azad Chowdhury (1611) in Ramgati municipality and AL candidate Ismail Hossain (13846 votes) defeating ABM Gilani (1611 votes) in Raipur.

In Chittagong, AL candidate Zafrullah (10610 votes) won the election defeating BNP candidate Azmatullah (464 votes) in Sandip municipality, ruling party candidate Giasuddin (7297) defeating BNP candidate Rafiqul Islam (475) in Mirsarai, while AL candidate Debashish Palit (28162) defeating BNP’s Abdullah Al Hasan (2120 votes) in Raujan and AL candidate Mahbubul Alam (11521 votes) defeating LDP candidate Ayub Kutubi (2570 votes) in Chandanaish municipality.

In Khagrachhari, independent candidate M Rafiqul Islam (9414 votes) won against AL candidate M Shan-e Alam (5537), AL candidate Shamsul Haque (7,336), against BNP’s Badsha Mia (3386 votes) in Matiranga municipality.

In Bandarban, AL candidate Md Islam Baby (8702) won against Jatiya Party candidate Mijanur Rahman (4461) in Bandarban municipality while AL’s Jahirul Islam (6606) against BNP’s Amir Hossain Amu (2835) in Lama.
