AL critical of BNP for taking Lord Carlile to assist Khaleda lawyers

Dhaka, March 20 – The ruling Awami League (AL) leaders think that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia doesn’t have any faith on her local lawyers who have been currently fighting for her cases.“BNP chief Khaleda Zia doesn’t have any trust on her local lawyers and that’s why she appointed foreign lawyer to fight for her release,” said AL presidium member Mohammad Nasim while talking to this correspondent yesterday.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday said that his party chief Khaleda Zia appointed a British lawyer to assist her local lawyers in fighting her cases.
Speaking to journalists, AL leader and food minister Advocate Quamrul Islam said criticized the BNP’s move in this regard and said whom Khaleda Zia appointed as her lawyer had maintained lobby for war criminals during the war crimes trial in Bangladesh.
He said BNP has proved its complicity with the war criminals by appointing British lawyer Lord Carlile. “So we will have to realise what BNP believes in and what ideology the party practices,” he added.
Talking over the issue AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said he sees no legal bar to take legal assistance from a foreign lawyer in favour of a convict.
“She (Khaleda) is a convicted prisoner. She can take legal assistance for her bail. I am not aware whether there is any bar to take legal assistance from abroad,” he said.
BNP chief Khaleda Zia was taken to prison on February 8 after she was sentenced to a five-year jail sentence by a Dhaka court on the charge of misappropriating a donation fund of the Zia Orphanage Trust.
The HC on March 12 granted her four months’ bail on four grounds: a short sentence of five years, health condition, her facing trial, and that the case records have reached the court   – Staff Reporter
