Dhaka, Oct 25 – BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday night said that Awami League is deceiving people over secularism and the Liberation War.“Awami League is good in doing two businesses–one secularism business and another Liberation War business,” he said while exchanging greetings with Hindu community members.
BNP arranged the programme, on behalf of its chairperson Khaleda Zia, marking Shuvo Bijoya at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.
Fakhrul alleged that the ruling party has been trying to stay afloat in politics by ‘selling’ secularism and Liberation War. “We all know it’s nothing, but deception with people. They always try to make you (Hindus) and the other people confused by carrying out propaganda over the two issues. You need to remain careful about it.”
He said many incidents of grabbing lands of Hindu, Buddhist and Christian community members by Awami League men took place in the last 10 years, though the party is always vocal over secularism.
The BNP leader said Awami League used to brand those who speak against it as the enemies of the Liberation War and its spirit. “But the party itself annihilated democracy, the main spirit of the Liberation War.”
He said the ruling party not only annihilated the Liberation War spirit but also snatched people’s rights. “We’re passing through a very critical time as our national existence is now at stake. We want to restore people’s basic rights.”
Fakhrul said the country’s current problem is a matter of concern for the entire nation, not only for BNP or Muslims and Hindus.
He alleged that no one, rather those belong to Awami League, can now cast their votes as the government has destroyed the country’s election system.
The BNP secretary general called upon all, including the Hindus, to come forward to ‘restore’ democracy and people’s voting rights with united efforts.
He urged the government to accept Jatiya Oikyfront’s seven-point demand before the announcement of the election schedule to hold the next polls in a credible and neutral manner. Or else, he warned, they together with people will realise their all demands through a strong movement.
BNP standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Mahbubur Rahman, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, vice chairman Netai Roy Chowdhury, central leaders Goutam Chakraborty, Joyanta Kundu, Romesh Dutta, Debashis Roy, Topan Dey and some Hindu community members spoke at the programme. – UNB
