AL GS Quader says, BNP won’t repeat boycott of election

Dhaka – The Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader Thursday said their arch rival Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) would not repeat its mistake by boycotting the next polls scheduled to be held in 2019.“BNP’s decision of boycotting the January 5 polls in 2014, was suicidal, and we hope that they would not repeat the same mistake,” he said this while talking to reporters after inaugurating a foot over bridge in Comilla.
At the same time he said taking part in the next polls or boycotting the polls is a democratic right of any political party, the government would not request anyone to join the polls.
“The next polls will be free, fair, credible and acceptable to all. We dnot want to score a goal in open field. Its up to Election Commission to ensure level playing field for all political parties during the next polls.
Quader, also road, transport and bridges minister, also expressed his firm optimism that Awami League-led 14-party alliance will secure victory in the next polls again as the party (AL) is in a strong position at the grassroots levels which have already proved through the recently held Union Parishad (UP) elections.
He also turned down BNP’s demand for holding the next polls under an election-time upportive government as there is no existence of such government in the country’s constitution.
“The next polls will be held as per the constitution,” he said.
The AL general secretary also said the Election Commission will conduct the next polls and the government will just perform routine work during the polls.
About deployment of army during the national polls, he said that the decision of deployment of army will depend on the EC. – Staff Reporter
