Voicing deep concern over the ‘growing incidents of repression and extrajudicial killing’, BNP on Saturday alleged that Awami League’s repressive acts surpassed the barbarism of the medieval age.
“BNP leaders and activists are being killed, made disappeared and repressed. Extrajudicial killing has become an order of the day. Awami League’s repressive acts outshined the medieval-age barbarism,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. He questioned, “How’ll the people of the country survive under the circumstances? Does anyone have the security of life in the country?”
The BNP spokesman was addressing a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office after a joint meeting of the party.
He accused Awami League of unofficially imposing a one-party rule Baksal in the country. “The repression the government is carrying out against the common people using the state machinery is unprecedented. We never saw such repressive acts in the past.”
“No one will be safe if this situation continues. So, the whole nation must get united to stop the repressive acts, forced disappearance and extrajudicial killings. We must raise our voice as we believe in democracy. Such extrajudicial killings can’t continue in a democratic country. It’s the largest enemy of democracy and humanity,” Fakhrul said.
He urged the media to play its due role in having the incidents of forced disappearance and extrajudicial killing stopped in the interest of the country, its people and their security.
Fakhrul alleged that the government is implementing an evil design to keep away BNP leaders and activists from politics and BNP from out of the future elections by filing “false” cases against the leaders and activists of the party.
He said “false” cases were field one after another against their party chief Khaleda Zia, senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman, many standing committee members, other central leaders and even district, upazila, thana and union-level leaders.
The BNP leader questioned how democracy will sustain and democratic practice will be possible to continue in a country when top to union level leaders of the main opposition party are implicated in “false” cases.
“We condemn and protest the government’s blueprint to keep BNP out of politics and demand the government immediately withdraw all the false cases filed against BNP leaders and activists,” he said.
He alleged that the ruling party ‘cadres’ and law enforcers have carried out serious repressive acts against BNP men in the last a few days at different parts of the country, including Magura and Laxmipur, Pabna and Bagerhat.
“We want democracy in Bangladesh to get a true institutional shape. But the Awami League-led government in the last five years tried to annihilate it through various means.
“Now assuming office illegally, this immoral government has intensified its efforts to create such a situation so that no one can do politics,” Fakhrul observed. Claiming BNP is an unarmed democratic party, he said they want to realise their demands and establish their rights in a peaceful manner. – UNB
