Alleged drug smuggler killed in ‘gunfight’ with cops


Dhaka – An alleged drug smuggler was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and police at Konabari in Kosba upazila of Brahmanbaria district early Tuesday, UNB news agency reported.The deceased was identified as Rahis Miah,48, son of late Sawdagor Ali Fakir of Pathariatek village in Akhaura upazila.
Officer-in-charge of Kosba Police Station Mohiuddin Ahammed said on a tip off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area when a gang of drug smugglers, including Rahis, were present at about 1:30am.
Police said, sensing presence of the law enforcers, the gang members opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.
At one stage, Rahis was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his associates managed to flee the scene, police said..
Five policemen, including a sub-inspector, were also injured during the gunfight.
The law enforcers recovered one pipe-gun, four cartridges, 100 bottles of liquor, 15 kilograms of hemp and 300 pieces of Yaba tablet from the spot. – Police said
