An alleged extremist has died in a police encounter at Kushtia’s Mirpur Upazila.
Enamul Haque, 35, was shot dead near Shahidul’s Brick Field around 3am Sunday, said Mirpur Police OC Kazi Jalaluddin.
He was a regional leader of the extremist group Purbabangla Communist Party (ML Janajuddha). An absconder in two cases, he had been sentenced to 24 years in prison.Police said seven to eight extremists including Enamul went to the brick field to pick up extortion money. They were surrounded by a joint team of Mirpur police and the district’s Detective Branch personnel.
An encounter followed when the extremists started firing.
“They fell back after half hour of firing. Enamul was found shot after we searched the area,” said OC Jalaluddin.
He was declared dead after being taken to the Mirpur Health Centre.
A shutter gun and several bullets have been recovered from the encounter site.
“Enamul was in hiding for long. He returned recently and had been organising his group. We’ve been getting reports on his extortion attempts for the past several days,” said Kushtia’s Additional Superintendant of Police, Soheil Reza.
There are 24 cases against him in Kushtia, Meherpur, Chuadanga and Alamdanga including seven for homicide. He had been handed a 24-year prison term in two cases. – bdnews24.com
