AL’s Hanif terms BNP’s token strike to free Khaleda a drama

Dhaka, July 9 – The ruling Awami League’s joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif has termed the BNP’s token hunger strike as a drama as what he thinks that there was no use of programme to push its demand.“BNP’s hunger strike to free its chairperson Khaleda Zia is completely a drama. it is not possible to free Khaleda from jail waging movement on the streets. BNP should keep faith upon the judiciary and BNP leaders should continue its legal fight to free their party chief. Otherwise, there is no way to free her,” he said.
Hanif, one of the ruling party spokespersons was addressing an extending meeting in the city on Monday. The Dhaka North City Unit of AL organized the meeting in a bid to make July 21 party programme a success.
Earlier, on the day Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) started a seven-hour token hunger strike at Mohanagar Natya Mancha in the city, in a bid to push its demand to free its chairperson Khaleda Zia who was sentenced to jail on February 8, in connection with a graft case verdict.
The ruling party joint general secretary also called upon the BNP leaders to stop such drama in the name of the movement and help the government in its development works.
About quota reform movement, Hanif alleged that BNP-Jamaat has hands behind the movement. He also said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has formed a committee over the issue so students should not wage a movement against the government move.
Meanwhile, at a press conference, AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader said BNP had wanted to cash quota reform movement in a bid to destabilize the government.
“BNP has been trying to wage a movement against the government but they are being failed to do so as the country’s people are not with them,” he said.
Over Khaleda Zia issue, the AL general secretary said BNP leaders would not be able to free their party chief except legal battle.
Replying to a question over Khaleda’s participation in the next polls, Quader said the country’s people don’t have any headache whether Khaleda Zia is in jail or outside the jail. Even the people don’t have any interest whether Khaleda will join the next polls, he added. – Staff Reporter
