AL’s student front, BCL, man ‘assaults’ cop in Shariatpur


Dhaka – A policeman was assaulted allegedly by a local leader of Awami League’s student associate Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital on Tuesday at noon, UNB news agency reported.
The injured policeman was identified as Nayek M Selim Matubbar, 42, son of late Abdus Sattar Matubbar, hailing from Satkaria village in Rajoir upazila of Madaripur district.Selim went to the hospital to receive treatment from Dr Devashis Saha, a physician of Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, around 12:30pm.
At that time, Akhtar Hossain Dhali, vice-president of Sadar upazila unit of BCL, went to the chamber of Dr Saha and asked him to issue a fake medical certificate against one Hossain Khandakar of Kashipur village.
As Saha declined to entertain his request, the BCL leader used abuses at him.
Eyewitness to the incident, Nayek Selim asked Dhali, also a nephew of sadar upazila vice-chairman M Alamgir Hossain, not to use abuses, which angered the BCL leader.
Later, he slapped Selim on his ear, creating a perforation in the eardrum of the policeman. He was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after giving primary treatment at the Sadar Hospital.
A case was filed with Palong Police Station against three people, including Dhali and his uncle Alamgir, in this connection.
Deputy Commissioner of Shariatpur Mahmudul Hossain Khan, Superintendent of Police Saifullah Al Mamun and Civil Surgeon M Mashiur Rahman Tagar visited the injured policeman at the hospital. When contacted, SP Saifullah said they were trying to arrest the accused.
