Amateur farmer grows Dragon fruits in Jhenidah

Amateur farmer Borhan Uddin (45) has courageously gone for cultivation dragon fruit in Kaligonj upazila of Jhenidah and made it monstrously popular among farmers and consumers level for its high commercial and nutritional values. Borhan Uddin services as a marketing manager of Universal Poultry Feed Hatcheries Limited under kaliganj upazila in Jhenidah.
Khamar-Mundia Village under Kaligonj upazila in Jhenidah district has got a diverse identity for Borhan’s commercially cultivating the fruit since 18 months ago. Borhan got one bigha (33 decimals) of land for Tk. 7,000 per annum for cultivating dragon fruit.Dr. Rustom Ali, an agriculturist and director of Universal Poultry Feed Hatcheries Limited brought Borhan 720 plants for Tk 80 per piece from Bangladesh Agriculture University since 18 months ago.
Blooming in a dragon tree starts with the advent of summer season in April, and harvesting continues until October. It takes 30-32 days to reap a ripe fruit after a flower blooms, said Borhan.
Though it normally requires 24 months after plantation to produce fruits, by taking proper care as shown by Dr. Rustom, Borhan has started reaping fruits within 18 months. Dragon is a reddish fruit under a pink skin which has cumin seed like spots. This juicy and tasty fruit will spread throughout the fruit kingdom of Bangladesh; Borhan hopes. The fruit is now selling from Tk. 300-400 per kg in the local wholesale market where as its retail price is Tk600 per kg.

A dragon fruit tree can produce fruits up to 35-40 years. The more the tree will be matured, the more it will produce and the size will get better. In the second year he will produce in a great deal from his orchard, he thinks. It does not take much of labor cost and only one or two men are enough to look after the garden occasionally.
From sale of dragon fruit and saplings, he has recently earned Tk. 50,000 while had to spend a total of Tk. 0.2 million in his Orchard.
Borahan’s whole orchard is presently filled with flowers. He is quite happy to see her expectations getting fulfilled. From 1200-1400 flowers there he hopes to have around 300 kgs
Worth nearly Tk.0.1 million by the end of this month.
Borhan has produced around 12,000-14,000 saplings in his orchard. If each of the saplings sells from Tk. 70-90, he will earn over 1.0 million at the end of the rainy season this year. A farmer already ordered for 3,000 saplings, he said.
Mosharrof Hossain, Agriculture Officer, kaliganj upazila said that he knew to local, Borahan cultivating Dragon fruits first time in kaliganj. He expects that when local bazaar is created then Dragon cultivators would have gained. – Mizanur Rahman
