Customs intelligence officials recovered 43 kilograms gold, worth Tk 21.50 crore, from the freight unit of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka early Wednesday.
The 43 gold bars, each weighing one kg, were kept hidden in a garment accessories parcel sent from Singapore in a Singapore Airlines flight that landed at the airport around 9:00 pm on Tuesday, said Mainul Khan, director general of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID).Gold smuggling through the airport continues despite the recoveries at regular intrvals and the indictment of many offers and employees of Biman Bangladesh Airlines on the charge. The discovery of the link of senior officials of the national carrier was a surprise to all. But the recoveries and filing of cases appear not to have a significant effect on gold smuggling.
The custons intelligence which has succeeded to catch some of the smuggling consignments should look at the roots of the illegal activity, say observers.
He said the gold consignment was sent undercover of garments accessories for a garment manufacturer company situated in Chittagong EPZ. The gold was recovered around 4:00 am from the airport freight unit after an overnight search.
“An investigation is on to find out the smugglers,” Mainul added.
