Former vice chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Dr Emajuddin Ahmed on Friday warned that they would immediately resist any obstruction or anarchic situation if created during the ensuing city corporation polls in Dhaka (north and south) and Chittagong.
BNP chairperson’s adviser Advocate Mahbub Hossain also warned that they strongly resist any one who would try to hold a farcical election. Their comments came while they were speaking in two separate programmes at Jatiya Press Club.Addressing a discussion meeting of Zia Kallayan Parishad, Prof Emajuddin, convenor of Shpto Nagorik Committee, a pro-BNP think tank, said Khaleda Zia has agreed to lend support to like-minded candidates to contest the city polls at a most difficult time.
“If any irregularities are seen during the polls scheduled to be held on April 28 it must be put up before the whole world. And the youths should play pioneering roles in this regard,” he said.
Responding to the remarks of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Parliament on Thursday that she does not understand what BNP mean by level playing field for all in the city polls, the former DU VC said level playing field means a voter can go to the polling centre and cast ballot for his/her chosen candidates of choice.
“Level playing filed also means that a candidate will be able to go to the voters and hold rallies without any interruption, and law enforcers will not obstruct them in any area,” he added.
Emajuddin termed the present government immoral and without public support and said people of Shoto Nagorik Committee would carryout campaign in each ward in favour of candidates, who are in favour of democracy.
“If necessary a 1,001-member committee would be formed to accommodate all democratic forces,” he said.
Emajuddin also termed the city polls as an opportunity of anti-government movement and put emphasis on ensuring victory of mayoral posts in three cities polls.
Rahija Khanam, convenor of the organisation, presided over the meeting.
In another meeting organised by Medical Technologists Association, Khandaker Mahbub Hossain said if the government wants to hold January 5-like another farcical poll, they would resist them strongly taking citizens of Dhaka and the Peshajibi Parisahd with them.
”The consequence of any effort to hold January 5 like polls will be severe one,” he warned.
He urged the BNP leaders to come out shrugging off their fears of police and the government. Otherwise, he suggested for them to quit the party.
“If you fear the police and government and cannot take to the street then you should quit the rank of BNP. It will not be accepted that you will hold on party post but remain silent during the critical juncture of the nation, he said.
He alleged that the government is playing its final game holding the city corporation polls to divert the attention of people from the movement of 20-party alliance.
Presided over by Biplob Bodiuzzaman, secretary general of the organisation, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by AZM Zahid Hossain, Advocate Sanaullah Miah and Rafiqullah Bacchu and Ruhul Amin Gazi. – Staff Reporter
