Appellate Div sets aside HC stay on Rizvi’s latest remand


The Supreme Court on Sunday stayed a High Court order that had stayed a lower court order placing BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on remand again in a vehicle torching case.
A four-member Appellate Division bench, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the order granting an appeal filed by the state.
On March 31, a Dhaka court placed the BNP leader on a three-day remand in the case filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the city.Following a petition filed by Rizvi, an HC bench on April 5 stayed the remand order for one month.
As the state moved the Supreme Court against the HC order, the chamber judge on Thursday sent the petition to the regular bench of the Appellate Division fixing Sunday for hearing.
Additional attorney general Momtaj Uddin Fakir said there is no legal bar to interrogating Rizvi in custody following the Supreme Court order.
On January 18, some activists of BNP-Jamaat vandalised and torched vehicles in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area amid the blockade enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
A case was filed with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in connection with the incident. – UNB
