Appropriate policy measures may ensure agri growth


Speakers in a discussion meeting at the Rajshahi University (RU), stressed that Bangladesh, is a rural-agrarian country where agriculture plays an important role in growth and stability, producing nearly one fourth of the economy’s output and providing livelihoods to more than two thirds of the population.Due to many problems such as declining agricultural productivity, soil degradation, land conversion, and rapid population growth Bangladesh is confronted with the question of how to achieve sustainable food production and food security for all. This can be addressed by adopting appropriate policy measures and institutional changes which are conducive to agricultural growth, while maintaining and sustaining the natural resource bases.
Besides, crop scientists must come forward to keep large role to build a sustainable food-sufficiency in Bangladesh, the speakers also urged.
Experts underscored these at the discussion meeting organised by the Crop Science & Technology Department to mark its tenth founding anniversary at the campus yesterday afternoon, a press release said.
RU Pro-VC Prof. Chwodhury Sarwar Jahan Sajol addressed the function as the chief guest while department chairperson Prof. Mosleh Uddin presided the meeting.
Among others, Agriculture faculty dean Prof. Saiful Islam and Dr. Shahana Kayes were present as special guests.
The speakers also discussed the prospects for sustainable agriculture in response to sustainable food security, while protecting human health and the environment.
Earlier the founding anniversary programmes began through a great rally participating by the present & former teachers-students of the department. It was inaugurated by vice chancellor Prof. Muhammed Mizan Uddin in front of the deptt premises Monday morning.
Moreover, reimburse event, raffle draw, friendly sports, fresher`s reception and cultural event took place. – RU Correspondent
