A former Supreme Court justice has called for a law to punish Khaleda Zia and David Bergman for their controversial remarks on the 1971 Liberation War.Former SC justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury raised the demand on Saturday, saying it was important to put both Khaleda and Bergman on trial for ‘outlandish statements’ on the Liberation War and its main organiser Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The justice was speaking at a conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity organised by the Ekattorer Ghatak o Dalal Nirmul Committee (Committee to eliminate the killers and collaborators of 1971).”A law to try offenders for baseless and derogatory remarks on the Liberation War is a must. Nobody has the right to undermine the history of our liberation struggle,” former justice Choudhury said.BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has raised doubts over the government’s claims that nearly three million people died during the 1971 Liberation War.She also said the Bangabandhu wanted to be the prime minister of undivided Pakistan rather than lead the country to independence.British national David Bergman had also challenged the government’s claims before Khaleda did.In a blog, Bergman, married to lawyer Kamal Hossain’s daughter, also advocated calling off the war crimes trials.Former Justice Choudhury said the Law Commission has started working on the draft of a law to challenge ‘deliberate and malicious attempts to distort the history of the Liberation War’and he said that is the ‘call of the time’.
