Bahai community leader shot in Bangladesh


Police have arrested an employee of the Rangpur Medical College Hospital on suspicion of the latter’s possible complicity in the shooting of a Bahai community leader.Ruhul Amin, who also works as personal secretary to the RMCH director, was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds in his leg and shoulder, police said on Sunday.Motorcycle-borne assailants pounced on him at the city’s RK Road in the morning, Kotwali Police Station OC Abdul Kader Jilani told assailants fired twice at Amin, who is Director of Rangpur Bahai Centre, outside his home, as he was getting on to a rickshaw, hiswife Shamsun Nahar said.Locals rushed him to hospital.Police have arrested RMCH employee Ashikur Rahman Nayan, 30, overhis suspected involvement in the shooting.Nayan is the organising secretary of the hospital’s Fourth-Class Employees’ Union.

The cause behind the attack remains unclear. OC Jilani has said the police are trying to ascertain if it was a fallout of a feud within the RMCH employees’ union.Jilani said Nayan was apprehended from the hospital premises on Sunday afternoon.RMCH Surgery unit chief Syed Abdul Taleb says Amin was shot in the leg and shoulder. “We’ve decided to send him to Dhaka for better treatment because the bullets could not be extracted from his body,” Taleb said.
