Ban ki-moon wants city polls to be transparent, inclusive, credible

The Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon has appealed to the authorities in all relevant institutions in Bangladesh to ensure that the April 28 city elections will be transparent, inclusive, and credible, according to a posting made at the UN web site.The Secretary-General’s spokesman has said on Thursday the UN chief executive has welcomeds the de-escalation of violence in Bangladesh in the past weeks. He is also encouraged by the opposition’s decision to participate in the city council elections for Dhaka and Chittagong, scheduled for 28 April.
Ban Ki-moon expressed the hope that the political parties would soon find a way to overcome their differences for the sake of the country’s long-term development and stability, and assured to support Bangladesh in this regard.
A written statement issued by the UN SG’s spokesman is as follows:
“The Secretary-General welcomes the de-escalation of violence in Bangladesh in the past weeks. He is also encouraged by the opposition’s decision to participate in the city council elections for Dhaka and Chittagong, scheduled for 28 April. The Secretary-General appeals to the authorities in all relevant institutions to ensure that the elections will be transparent, inclusive, and credible.
“The Secretary-General hopes that political parties will soon find a way to overcome their differences for the sake of the country’s long-term development and stability. The United Nations remains fully committed to supporting Bangladesh in this regard.” – News Desk
