Allegations have been raised that women are being trafficked to war-torn Syria from Bangladesh as sex workers and domestic help.The women are reportedly being lured with the prospect of jobs in different countries in the Middle East and but once they are taken out of the country, they are being sold in Syria as sex workers.Voicing deep concerns over the issue, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has recently informed the government about the matter and stressed the need for immediate action to stop women trafficking.The elite law enforcement agency informed the government that at least 43 were already trafficked to Syria. It also asked the foreign ministry to take necessary measures to bring them back.Prothom Alo investigations reveal that three women who were trafficked to Syria have managed to return home after failing sick over there.They said several hundred Bangladesh women were being used as sex workers like them in different Syrian cities while others were working as domestic help.They said there was another group of women who were trafficked from Bangladesh but nobody knows their whereabouts or how they were being used there.It was learnt that a Bangladeshi woman trafficked by international racket of human traffickers is worth almost Tk 300 thousand. It, however, varies depending on the age and the beauty of the woman.The three women who fell victim of human trafficking said they were given training in Arabic, too.
When contacted, the state minister for foreign affairs said the matter is very dangerous and worrying. “The government must take measures to bring Bangladeshi women back from Syria if they had fallen victim to such racket,” he added.In its letter to the home minister, the RAB-3 said they have filed a case with the Paltan police station in this connection.Prothom Alo came to know that some recruiting agencies in connivance with an international ring of human traffickers are trafficking women with promises of jobs in the Middle East.One of the tree women claimed she gave Tk 50,000 to a recruiting agency to goabroad. The RAB is investigating the matter. RAB-3 commander Khandaker Golam Sarowar said they have arrested some of those who are involved in trafficking women.
