BD handball team to fly for Korea Tuesday for Asian Champs


Dhaka – An 18-member Bangladesh National Handball team will fly for South Korea on Tuesday night to participate in the Asian Men’s Championship scheduled for January 18-28 in the Korean city of Suwon in a bid to gather experiences from the heavyweight meet in their first-ever appearance.Fourteen teams, split into four groups, will compete in the 11-day meet, a qualifying meet for the Men’s World Cup Handball to be held either in Denmark or Germany next year. Top four teams of the ensuing 18th Asian Handball meet will qualify for the World Cup Handball ‘2019.Bangladesh team, which were placed in strong Group C of the prestigious Asian Handball Championship with Olympics champions South Korea, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and giant neighbour India will play South Korea in one of the six opening day’s matches on January 18 at 3 pm (Korean time).In the remaining group matches, Bangladesh will play the UAE on January 19 and India on January 20.President of Bangladesh Handball Federation (BHF) AKM Nurul Fazal Bulbul disclosed the details of the tournament at a press conference at the federation office on Sunday afternoon.BHF general secretary Asaduzzaman Kohinoor, team leader, manager, coach and captain Mahbubul Alom Chowdhury also spoke on the occasion.Addressing the press conference, the federation and team officials said this will be Bangladesh’s first tournament in the Asian level where most of the participating teams are very strong.”Through this tournament, we’ll be able to gather valuable experiences, international exposure as well as measure our standard in the Asian level,” said Kohinoor.AKM Mominul Huq Shaeed has been named as the team leader of the Bangladesh team that comprise of 14 players and four officials.The other participating countries are:
Group A – Japan, Iran and Uzbekistan
Group B – Bahrain, Oman and Australia.
Group D – Qatar, Saudi Arabia, China and New Zealand.
