Bangladeshi-origin Russian gymnast Margarita Mamun clinched the gold medal in rhythmic gymnastics individual all-around in the 31st Olympic Games in Rio on Saturday night to give Russia its fifth consecutive gold medal in the event.The 20-year-old’s performance outscored three-time world champion and her Russian compatriot Yana Kudryavtseva.

Margarita, also known as ‘The Bengal Tiger’, scored 76.483 to clinch the gold medal while her compatriot and world champion Yana Kudryavtseva scored 75.608 to win the silver and Ukraine’s Ganna Rizatdinova earned 73.583 points to settle for the bronze, according to put up the top score on clubs and the second-best score among the 10 finalists on hoop, ribbon and ball.After the results, ‘The Bengal Tiger’ said: “I wasn’t thinking about the results. I was just trying not to make any mistakes and listen to the instructions of my coach (Amina Zaripova).”Eighteen-year-old Kudryavtseva failed to catch one of her clubs during the end of her club routine, which gave Margarita breathing space.Russia gymnasts won every gold medal in the sports since Sydney 2000.Rita was born in Moscow, Russia to a Bangladeshi father and Russian mother.Her father, Abdullah Al Mamun from Rajshahi, has a master’s degree in marine engineering, while her mother, Anna, is a former rhythmic gymnast. Rita has one younger brother named Filipp Al Mamun.Meanwhile, State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam, MP, in his Facebook status said, “We can feel happy for her (Margarita Mamuns’) achievement although the then administration during the last caretaker government tenure did not show any interest in the appeal of Margarita’s father to play for Bangladesh.”
