Bhashani Stadium gets new floodlights for Asia Cup


Dhaka – The newly installed floodlights at the Maulana Bhashani National Stadium formally inaugurated on Monday ahead of the eight-nation Hero Asia Cup of men’s hockey to be played here from October 11.In its 10th edition, the quadrennial event returns to Bangladesh after 32 years since 1985. All matches will take place at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium in Dhaka from Oct 11-22.The premier continental tournament will feature hosts Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Japan in Pool A while defending champions South Korea, China Malaysia and Oman in Pool B.India and Japan will play inaugural match on Oct 11 at 3 pm while hosts Bangladesh will encounter Pakistan at 5:30 pm local time.Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal will inaugurate the meet as chief guest during the opening ceremony while country’s sports loving Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to be the chief guest at the closing ceremony.Exciting fireworks will color the Dhaka skyline at the closing ceremony of the Hero Asia Cup at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium on October 22.Tournament and federation officials the revealed fact and preparations of the prestigious meet in a press conference at the hockey stadium on Monday.Mamunur Rashid, the secretary of the tournament committee said the electronic scoreboard will be operational within two or three days.”The framework has been completed and the installation process will require two days, we hope to see it fully functional as soon as possible” said Mamun.Mamun also informed that all the teams will reach Dhaka on October 8. The officials of the Asian Hockey Federation alongwith the CEO will arrive at Dhaka on October 6.Japan team will reside at the Sonargaon Hotel while Bangladesh, China and Korea will be accommodated at Hotel Purbani. India, Pakistan, Malaysia and Oman will board at Fars Hotel.Shafiullah al Munir, the chairman of the tournament committee said exciting fireworks will be illuminating the closing ceremony. “The opening ceremony will be a just a formal one with simple program, but we have chalked out a lavish closing ceremony where honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will present.The first part of the closing ceremony will showcase the culture and history of Bangladesh, the second part will feature the culture of the other participants.The curtain of the meet will fall down with exciting fireworks around the stadium and we have chalked out the program in a wide angle vision” Munir added.The tournament committee has also taken the initiatives to host two souvenir shops during the tourney.It was also revealed that near 30 foreign journalists has requested for the accreditation.BHF general secretary Abdus Sadeque, the vice presidents Khaja Rahmatullah and Abdur Rashid Sikder and Shahjahan Basunia, the official of sponsors First Security Islami Bank were also present on the occasion.Earlier, the theme song of Hero Men’s Asia Cup Hockey 2017 was officially unveiled at the Dutch Bangla Bank auditorium of Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) Bhaban in the city last Saturday to inspire the players as well as to provide the spectators a stimulating atmosphere.The promotional video of the prestigious eight-nation Asian Cup Hockey was also revealed on the function occasion.The theme song titled ‘Atti Tarar Mela’, the ‘Spectrum of Eight Stars’ is sung by Arif, a promising singer of the new generation. Mannan Mohammed is the lyricist and the composer of the song.Introduced in 1982, the inaugural Men’s Asia Cup was won by Pakistan who also won the next two editions in 1985 and 1989.
