Bhutanese PM Tshering arrives in Dhaka on 3-day visit

Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay arrived in Dhaka on Saturday morning on a three-day official visit at the invitation of his Bangladesh counterpart Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. An aircraft of Royal Bhutan Airlines “Drukair” carried the Bhutanese Premier and the members of his entourage to the city.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina received the Bhutanese premier at the airport. A tiny tot presented a bouquet to Tshering Tobgay. After arrival at the airport, the Bhutanese prime minister was given a guard of honour by a smartly turned out contingent drawn from three services.Accompanied by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Bhutanese premier took salute from a decorated dais. He later inspected the guard. The national anthems of the two countries were played at that time.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan were present at the airport.
Besides, the chiefs of three services, PM’s principal secretary and press secretary, the foreign secretary, the inspector general of police, the dean of the diplomatic corps, the Bhutanese ambassador in Dhaka and high civil and military officials were present.
After the warm reception at the airport, the Bhutanese prime minister went to Savar National Memorial where he paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the War of Liberation.
It is Tshering Tobgay’s maiden visit to Bangladesh after taking office as the prime minister of Bhutan in July last year.
The Bhutanese Prime Minister, who is leading a 10-member high-profile team of ministers is scheduled to meet Sheikh Hasina at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) at 5:10 pm and hold talks on a wide range of issues relating to bilateral relations and other matters of common interest.
Cooperation in the areas of electricity, connectivity, trade between the two countries, water resources management and culture are likely to be discussed at the meeting.
Before the bilateral talks, they will have a tete-a-tete for about an hour according to sources at the PMO. The Bhutanese prime minister will join a banquet to be hosted in his honour by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Pacific Sonargaon Hotel at night. He will enjoy a cultural function later.
During his stay in Dhaka, the Bhutanese PM will call on President Abdul Hamid, Begum Raushan Ershad, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed and PM’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Dr Gowher Rizvi will meet him.
A delegation of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industy (FBCCI) and Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Professor Pran Gopal Dutta will call on Tshering Tobgay.
There is a possibility of renewal of the existing bilateral trade agreement between Bangladesh and Bhutan during the visit, said Foreign Minister A H Mahmood Ali here on Monday.
Bangladesh and Bhutan signed the agreement in 1980, granting each other the “most favoured nation” preferential status for trade development. The validity of the deal expired in November.
Roads intersections and medians in the capital have been decorated with the national flags of Bangladesh and Bhutan as well as large-size portraits of Tshering Tobgay and Sheikh Hasina to mark the visit. – Agencies
