A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight escaped a serious accident following ignition of fire in the plane’s cockpit on Saturday night. The flight BG085 of Boeing 777-300 which took off from Singapore and was scheduled to land at the Shahjalal Airport at 6-30 pm finally touched down two hours and 15 minutes later due to technical trouble.
Pilots of the aircraft flew towards the Bay of Bengal, emptied the fuel, and after several rendezvous touched down at about 8-45 pm. The flight was carrying 375 passengers. Airport security sources confirmed the event.The sources said after reaching the sky over Dhaka there developed mechanical trouble for which there was ignition of fire in the cockpit. The aircraft was then flown over the Bay and most of the fuel was emptied. The plane then made several rounds over Bangladesh territories before making an emergency landing at the airport.
Due to the ignition the aircraft was filled with smoke. Pilots and crew members tried to control the ignition using fire control equipment on board. At one stage the airport was alerted. Fire fighting units and ambulences were taken near the runway for emergency. The aircraft finally landed without any damage to its body or injury of passengers, the sources added.
The 375 passengers had a sigh of relief after the breath-taking 135 minutes of extra flight of extreme anxiety. – News Desk
