The re-registration of subscriber identity modules (SIMs) through biometric verification system begins on Wednesday on an experimental basis, State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim said on Tuesday.Prime Minister’s ICT adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy will inaugurate the process at 10:30 am, she said while addressing a press briefing at the Secretariat.
The junior minister, however, said mobile phone operators will officially launch the SIM re-registration using the biometric verification system on December 16 next.
The re-registration process will continue till April next year, she said, adding that if any unregistered SIM is found after the deadline, the mobile phone operator concerned will be fined.
Talking about her 90-day work plan fixed after taking over charge as state minister, Tarana Halim described the overall performance of offices under her as good one.
She, however, said BTCL’s submarine work is not satisfactory as only 50 percent work has so far been done in the sector. “Those who performed well will be rewarded and those failed to deliver will have to face action like transfer and new posting.”
Besides, the drive against illegal Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) business will continue, the junior minister said.
Two teams of Bangladesh Telecommunication and Regulatory Commission (BTRC) conduct drives against the illegal VoIP business every week, revealed Tarana.
Meanwhile, around 750 post offices across the country will be turned into e-centres by October 30 while the rest gradually, she said.
