DHAKA – Bir Protik Nurjahan Kakon Bibi, a valiant freedom fighter, died at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College last night at the age of 103 due to old age complications. She breathed her last at 11:05pm at the hospital where she had been undergoing treatment for pneumonia since March 19, a press release said here today.
She was laid to eternal rest at the graveyard of her native village Jhirargaon under Doarabazar upazila in Sunamganj district with state honour following a namaz-e-janaza at Laxmipur School playground this afternoon.
She left behind a daughter and host of relatives as well as admirers to mourn her death, added the release.
Kakon Bibi was a secret agent and directly fought against the Pakistani occupation forces during the nine-month long Liberation War in 1971.
During the Independence War, she was also arrested and brutally tortured by Pakistani army and their collaborators.
Born to an ethnic Khasia family at Sunamganj border in the early 60s, she got married and changed her name to Nurjahan Begum from Kakon Hennyata.
However, she was commonly known as Kakon Bibi.BSS
