Bird fair held on JU campus amid mixed criticism

Savar, Dhaka 19 Jan – A daylong bird fair on Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus was organised on Friday) amid mixed criticism about gathering of the guest birds on campus.Aiming at raising mass awareness, JU Zoology department organised the fair for the 17 th consecutive time that was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Farzana Islam, as the chief guest, while Prof. Dr. Monwar Hossain, chairman of the department, was in the chair.
The fair was arranged at a time, the migratory birds are hardly seen on campus. The guest birds, due to the disturbances to their habitats, left the almost JU lakes.
Prof Dr. Kamrul Hasan, also the convener of the fair, said, ‘Leasing out of the lakes for fish farming and failure to ensure the safe haven to the winter birds back the decreasing number of the birds’.
A large number of visitors and vehicles, using the campus in purpose of picnic venue and cleaning the lakes out are also causing the guest birds to decrease in number.
Abu Sayeid, a sophomore of JU Geography and Environment dept. said, ‘Contrary to the goal of fair arrangement, mass gathering of the visitors also causes disturbance to the winter birds that makes them flee the lakes on campus’.
The fair concluded thru the holding of different events to raise mass awareness about the conservation of birds.
In the meantime, for their contribution to conservation of birds thru reporting, “Conservation Media Award” was given to Nur Alam Himel of banglanews24.com and Md. Asaduz Zaman of The Daily Star in different categories.
The fair was jointly organized by Wildlife Rescue Center (WRC), Bangladesh Bird Club, Aranyak Foundation, Prokriti O Jibon Foundation, Channel 24, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Bangladesh Forest Department. – JU Correspondent
